Chaitén

Chaitén is a small town located in the Los Lagos Region, in southern Chile, known for its stunning landscape of native forests, mountains, and volcanoes.

The town is a starting point for exploring the Carretera Austral and the southern region of Chile, famous for its pristine nature, rich biodiversity, and outdoor activities.

After the eruption of the Chaitén Volcano in 2008, the town began to rebuild itself and remains an ideal base for exploring nearby national parks and natural wonders.

Highlights in Chaitén

From the Mirador Chaitén, you can enjoy a spectacular panoramic view of the town, the Maullín River, and the Chaitén Volcano. This viewpoint is one of the most visited spots by tourists who want to see a complete picture of the natural beauty surrounding the town.

Mirador Chaitén

Pumalín Park is one of the largest protected areas in Chile, located near Chaitén. This park is famous for its biodiversity, native forests, lakes, and mountains, as well as its conservation history led by American philanthropist Douglas Tompkins. The park offers various hiking trails, including walks to beautiful viewpoints and camping areas.

The Chaitén Volcano is one of the region’s main attractions, famous for its eruption in 2008, which covered the town in ash and altered the surrounding landscape. Today, the volcano remains an active zone and an attraction for adventurers. Visitors can hike around the volcano’s surroundings and observe its geological formations and vegetation that has started to reclaim the land.
